New Council homes being built in Haringey have been completed, in what has described as a milestone moment for the borough.
The occaision was marked by a visit from the Mayor of London Sir Sadiq khan and TV presenter George Clarke.
The Mayor, joined by the renowned architect, were also accompanied by councillor Peray Ahmet.
Cllr Ahmet said: “George and the Mayor are huge advocates for social housing and the way it can transform people’s lives.
“Everyone should have a safe, warm, comfortable and affordable home.”
The Housing development project was part funded by £43.5 million from City hall.
That funding delivered 272 new Council homes in Wingspan walk in Tottenham Hale, built on previously disused land.
These homes are available at social rent and aim to provide security to families putting down roots in the local community.
Sir Sadiq Khan and George Clarke, who both grew up in Council housing, visited the wingspan walk development, where they spoke about their memories of growing up and the importance of social housing.
The completion of 1000 new homes make this one of the biggest council house building programmes in the capital in a generation.
Since 2018, more than 25,000 council homes have been built or are being built, with the help of city hall funding.
The Mayor, in partnership with the government, plans to implement a series of ‘time-limited emergency measures’ to unblock house building.
This will include powers for city hall to review and call in housing schemes.
Khan said: “As Mayor, I am absolutely determined to tackle our urgent housing crisis and continue to do everything in my power to deliver more homes of all tenures.”
