North London MP launches pop-up free legal advice centre

A North London MP has launched a free legal advice centre.

Sarah Sackman, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, brought together constituents to speak with volunteer lawyers from the community to access legal advice on issues including housing, employment and crime.

This new pop-up centre fills the gap left by the closure of Barnet Law Centre in 2014 following funding cuts.

Sarah Sackman MP said: “Access to justice should not be determined by how much money you have.

“I know from my own experience the importance of making legal aid accessible.

“I’m proud to see our community turning out to help each other, using their skills and knowledge as a practical force for good.”

Sackman, who practiced as a barrister prior to being elected, volunteered at the free legal advice centre in Toynbee Hall in the East End as a young lawyer.

It was this experience, she says, that demonstrated to her the importance of accessible justice.

Residents in Childs Hill were the first to be invited to the free legal advice centre, hosted at the Jewish Vegetarian Society in Golders Green, with the next instalment at the ArtsDepot in North Finchley.

Moira, a volunteer lawyer and criminal solicitor, said: “It was very rewarding to be able to give back to the community.

“Many people don’t realise their rights and the options available to them and being able to help bridge that gap is exactly what important initiatives like this are about”.

Legal advice centres provide free, independent legal advice to those who may not be able to afford a private solicitor.

The pop-up legal advice centre connects residents with volunteer lawyers who support them in taking the next steps to resolve their issues.

One resident, Mia, spoke following the session about the support she had received.

“This event was really helpful for me. I’ve been experiencing ongoing issues in a criminal case and having someone listen and explain all my options made a real difference.

“I felt heard and supported and am now ready to take the next steps.”
