London elections 2026: No overall control in Enfield after Conservative surge

The Conservative Party secured a missed out on winning a majority on Enfield Council by just one seat in Friday’s local elections.

But this was a major victory for the Tories as they put an end to Labour’s 16-year hold on the borough with the Conservatives securing 31 seats, Labour 27, and Greens five.

However, the biggest shock of the day was the Green Party winning seats for the first time in Enfield, picking up five in Enfield Lock, Ponders End, and New Southgate.

The new Conservative council leader, Alessandro Georigiou, said: “I’m overwhelmed by the number of votes and seats we have gained.

“I am so proud of the campaign we have run, and I just want to thank the people of Enfield for putting their trust in us.

“We plan to implement our manifesto in full and I hope our other colleagues across the chamber realise what were doing is for the benefit of Enfield.”

A major victory for the Conservative Party was in Bowes ward, with former Labour Councillor Deno Lemonides winning this time as a Conservative candidate and placing Bowes under Tory leadership for the first time since 1986.

Lemonides said: ”I got disillusioned with party politics.

“Alex asked me to join the Conservative Party four years ago, so when Alex said come to Bowes, I came to Bowes and I will represent the people.”

Another standout Conservative victory was in the Highfield Ward where Bambos Charalambous – not to be confused with the Enfield Labour MP Bambos Charalambous – and Peter Charalambous won.

Councillor Bambos Charalambous said: “Four years under a Labour-run ward, many changes are to be made and we will work hard for the residents.”

Peter Charalmbous added: “The people of Highfield have spoken and have chosen us to represent them, and they will be really well represented.”

The Green Party’s Laura Davenport said: “We’re delighted that the people of New Southgate and Enfield Lock have put their faith in the Green Party.

“The Greens came a strong second in many of the seats across Enfield as well.

“We aim to put the hope back into Enfield and create an prosperous, affordable, and green borough”.
