Family-friendly fundraiser comes to Waltham Abbey this weekend

Families and their four-legged friends are set to gather in Waltham Abbey this weekend at Elmtree Canine retreat for a new fundraiser in aid of Underdog International.

Mad Hatter’s Dog Day is co-hosted by Haute Dogs to celebrate the launch of their 2026 calendar, with previous calendars raising more than £120,000 in eight years.

The programme runs from 11am to 5pm, including a Dapper Dog Show, an agility display and a children’s hat making tent.

The Haute Dogs 2026 Calendar is priced at £15 and photos pair rescue dogs with products from couture milliners, hat-designers.

Founder Awon Golding, inspired by her own experience rescuing a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, said: “People are quick to cross the street when they see a staffy or rescue. I want to reframe the way rescues are perceived.

“This is a celebration of rescue dogs and the joy they bring. Pairing them with couture millinery softens their image and shows their true character.”

The proceeds will go towards Underdog International, a charity which runs global education and therapy programmes as well as rehoming rescue animals.

For Underdog International, the day is about more than fundraising, with founder and CEO Nadine Kayser emphasising affordability was key.

Kayser said: “The aim is to create a day that’s full of joy but doesn’t break the bank. We’ve kept prices low — a cup of tea will be £1.50, cake £2.

“Compassion and community are what drive our charity, and we want this event to reflect that.”

Organisers expect more than a thousand visitors, with 400 tickets already sold. Kids and dogs attend for free, and adult tickets cost £3 each.

Kayser is particularly looking forward to a showcase from therapy dog Sunshine and her owner Laura Freebarnet, who support children in schools.

This unique method is utilised where other interventions such as meditation and therapy have failed.

Kayser added: “When you put a dog in front of a child, they instinctively respond with kindness and joy. Through that connection, we can build a more compassionate future.”
