Daniel Kaluuya helps inspire next generation at Roundhouse’s Centre 59

Award-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya has been named the new associate director of the Roundhouse following the Centre 59 youth theatre company opening the Three Sixty Festival in April.

The Get Out star launched Centre 59 as a youth theatre company and creative hub to support young people aged 11-25 at the Chalk Farm venue.

The Roundhouse website described it is an accessible space and entry point for young people to the artform of storytelling in theatre and the performing arts, with members Mannan Guled and Sinead Geral among those who have been able to excel there.

Guled said: “Daniel Kaluuya is the creative artist director of Centre 59, and we are making our own scripts, directing and trying so much stuff creatively and we are now in rehearsal mode.”

The Roundhouse hosting event such as the Three Sixty Festival has been huge for Geral as well.

She said: “Just having this event for networking and being around like-minded individuals within the creative scene, makes it the perfect event.”

Since launching the performing arts company in 2023, Kaluuya has worked with schools and communities in the surrounding area.

He also guided Centre 59 in performing their original play Sonder at the Roundhouse Three Sixty in April.

Speaking at the Roundhouse, Kaluuya underlined his desire to ensure the opportunities he enjoyed as a young actor were available to future generations.

He said: “When I reflect on the start of my career, I had access to spaces like Anna Scher Theatre that were imperative to my development.

“With cuts to arts funding and youth centres, those same opportunities are disappearing.

“I want to change that.”
