WATCH: Hyrox fitness competition and gym class taking over London

Hyrox is the latest fitness trend sweeping through the capital, and specifically-catered gym classes have seen a sharp rise in popularity.

In the past five years there has been a 1,000% increase in participation, according to the BBC, and many people’s introduction to the sport is at their local gym.

Invented by the German duo of Christian Toetzke and Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fürste, the first Hyrox race was in 2017 with 650 participants.

The next London Hyrox in December is expected to have 40,000 athletes racing over the weekend.

Marcus Toh, the class instructor at The Gym Group in Wembley Park, believes one of the reasons behind its popularity is the simplicity of the workouts.

He said: “The context of Hyrox is essentially fundamental and functional exercises.

“I think because it’s that kind of concept, it allows everyone to do it and everyone to really push themselves.

“There’s basically no excuses for anyone not to be able to do it or want to do it.”
