London’s farmers markets: the rise, struggles and importance

Swiss Cottage Farmers Market has been operating for over 20 years and is one of the many found in London each week.

Farmers markets generate over £500 million every year injecting lifeblood into rural communities and empowering small farms.

There has been a 400% increase in farmers markets since 1994 which is equal to one market per 28,000 people.

Swiss Cottage Farmers Market Manager, Laura Di Pietro said: “Farmers Markets are very important for the local economy, for the environment and for the local community.

“Local businesses are struggling because big corporations and global chains are taking over.”
