How English lessons have helped displaced Ukrainians living in the UK

Since their arrival in the UK, charities and volunteers have been running free English lessons for displaced Ukrainians to help them feel more at home in a foreign country.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, displaced Ukrainians were able to come to the UK through specially introduced visa routes in March.

For many of the displaced Ukrainians who had to escape the conflict, they spoke little English when they arrived in the UK.

This would have added to the severe degree of anxiety and fear felt after leaving their homes behind in the horrors of war.

However, the impact of English lessons for displaced Ukrainians has been undoubtedly positive, significantly improving their quality of life.

They offer them community support, but also help them get by in daily life by being able to read street names, navigate transport systems and apply for work.
